Helping Your Client Start a Fund

Give us a call at any time to explore an option or discuss a client's situation. We respect client anonymity and are glad to work exclusively through you.  We are also happy to meet with you and a client to discuss charitable options. Please contact JoAnn Turnquist, President & CEO, at 803.254.5601 x323 or joann@yourfoundation.org.

Here is a step-by-step process to help you assist your clients when starting their fund:

  • Determine what type of contribution your client would like to use to create a fund. Contributions may be in the form of cash, securities, or other property valued at $10,00 or more.
  • Name the fund. Clients can use their own name, the name of a family member or one they invent.
  • Determine current fund advisors such as the client and spouse, and successors such as children.
  • Specify how grant distributions are to be acknowledged - whether in the name of the fund or anonymously.
  • Complete and sign a simple governing document based on the type of fund established. Sample governing documents for a number of fund types are available in the Form & Documents section.

Once a fund is established, donors may:

  • Add to the fund at any time in any dollar amount with any form of appreciated asset.
  • Recommend distributions from their fund to charities, locally, nationally or internationally.
  • Receive assistance from Community Foundation staff if they have a particular interest but need more information about a community organization or charitable project.
