A Love Song  - A Designated Fund Donor Story
Since she was a little girl, Marge Adams loved opera. She and her aunt would make fudge and listen to opera. Jim Adams mother was an accomplished pianist who taught him lessons before he went to school. While stationed at Bethesda, Jim and a Navy buddy would travel to Washington to hear opera whenever they could.

Neither Marge nor Jim realized then that someday their mutual love of opera would help countless young, aspiring singers realize their dreams.

When Jim asked Marge to marry him, he was still in residency without much money, but he promised her that they could listen to operas together on Saturday afternoons. Saturday afternoons by the radio eventually turned into weekend trips to opera houses, both regionally and nationally.

The Adams interest in the art didn't just stop with a deep appreciation of opera, however. They attended local and regional auditions of singers competing for a chance to audition at the New York Metropolitan Opera and, eventually, Jim was asked to take the position of Regional Chair of the National Council. Jim agreed to accept the position because of his love for opera and because the resigning chair just happened to be his old Navy buddy with whom he had shared a love of opera.

When Jim died, Marge established the James F. Adams Memorial Fund as a designated fund that would provide money to sponsor the local Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions and assist the winning three performers with their expenses to attend the regional audition and a chance to achieve their dreams. Through the designated fund, the Adams love for opera and each other has become a legacy that will live forever through the beauty of song.
