Donor Advised Funds
An attractive alternative to setting up a private foundation, a Donor Advised Fund allows the donor to recommend how money from the fund is distributed. A Donor Advised Fund also provides the flexibility to give to many varying organizations and programs.
Benefits
- The donor recommends recipients of grants.
- The fund is not limited to cause, organization or geography, but is allowed to support any charitable cause.
- The Community Foundation operates with an intimate knowledge of the community and its needs while commercial donor advised funds are less personal and do not have local familiarity.
- Donors do not have to oversee administrative duties as they would with a private foundation.

The Personal Connection - An Individual Donor Story The Kahns have a tradition of philanthropy which has been taught and encouraged for four generations. Learning the value of philanthropy from his father, Irwin Kahn established a fund with the Foundation at its inception in his fathers name the M.B. Kahn Construction Company Fund.
Irwin's son, Alan, and his wife, Charlotte, wanted to continue their family's philanthropy and actively involve their three children, their spouses and the grandchildren. By setting up a donor advised fund, the members of Charlotte and Alan's family can participate in a supporting role by advising and making charitable distributions. In addition, the donor advised fund offers the Kahns the flexibility of a private foundation while affording superior investment performance and minimal administrative responsibilities.
The Kahn family is motivated by a long-term family history of giving back to the community in which they live and work. With a donor advised fund they are able to give to the Midlands organizations with which they are involved every day, and through the Community Foundation, invest in the future of the community. printer friendly version
