A Lesson from LukeJanuary 8, 2015
Giving Better, Making a Difference, Talk About Giving, Conversation Starters
After spin class last Saturday, my neighbor Kevin asked my advice about making a donation. His son Luke, who is in 2nd grade, had seen the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (APSPCA) commercials showing injured and abandoned animals and wanted to make a donation to an animal shelter. After discussing some local shelter options, I told Kevin about the Foundation’s Talk About Giving Game and how it could help facilitate his family’s conversation about charity.
Later that morning I delivered the game to Luke and his family. Before handing him the game, I asked Luke why he was raising money to help animals. He said, “Because they need me.” Wow! Luke was very proud that he had raised $57 in change and hoped to raise more. Then, Luke tore open the card game, began pulling out cards and asking his Mom, Dad and younger brother, Henry, questions. “What will you do when you no longer have to work?” Luke and Henry both said give money away. More cards were pulled out and more questions were asked and answered. Luke said that when his friends came over that afternoon, he was going to teach them the game so they could learn to give. Incredible!
Before I left, Kevin asked Luke one final question, “What do you like to do?” Luke said fish and make money, money he could share. Then he asked if I would make a donation to his fund…Luke was right! He is a great fisherman and fundraiser! A wonderful lesson from a very special 8 year old!
