September 9, 2016 (Columbia, SC) – Central Carolina Community Foundation, the Midlands expert in philanthropy, has awarded 94 scholarships totaling $236,648 to some of South Carolina and the country’s outstanding students.
The Community Foundation manages 37 scholarship funds that provide education opportunities for students across South Carolina. Each scholarship has its own specific purpose and eligibility criteria according to the recommendations of the donor. Many of the funds have been established as testaments to the donor’s passion for education and rewards students for their hard work.
For example, ten years ago, Colonel Lew Ballington together with the South Carolina Arms Collectors Association began awarding scholarships to dependents of current or deceased members of the Association. Their goal was simple: to help young people get ahead in life. In 2013, the Association transferred their funds to an endowed scholarship fund at the Community Foundation, as Colonel Ballington says, “to make sure we were doing business the way it should be done.” Each year since, the Community Foundation has provided guidance and support to the Association, helping to recommend recipients and making it easier to manage the scholarship process. The South Carolina Arms Collectors Association’s scholarships has touched many lives, awarding 21 scholarships totaling $19,250 since the fund’s inception and inspiring students in the community to reach and use their great potential.
“Our scholarship funds are just one of the many ways that donors in our community work with the Foundation to make a difference in the Midlands,” said Foundation President and CEO JoAnn Turnquist. “Through the generosity of our fundholders, these students now have the opportunity to achieve their academic goals without the financial burden that often accompanies a college education. We congratulate each of our scholarship recipients and wish them well as they continue to learn and grow.”
Central Carolina Community Foundation will begin accepting applications for the 2017-2018 school year in January 2017. For more information about applying for scholarships or establishing a scholarship fund at the Foundation, please visit www.yourfoundation.org or call 803.254.5601.
