Midlands Gives Spotlight: Communities In Schools of the Midlands

In the U.S., approximately 1 in 5 children under the age of 18 live in poverty and have additional responsibilities outside of school that can attending school seem more of a burden rather than an opportunity to learn and grow. Communities In Schools of the Midlands works directly with schools in the Columbia area to build relationships that empower students to succeed inside and outside the classroom. Full-time site coordinators are placed in many schools in the Midlands and serve as a liaison between students and the services they may need in the community. In addition, the organization provides mentorship programs that focus on academics, positive behaviors, attendance, and college preparation.

Communities In Schools of the Midlands has participated in Midlands Gives since 2017, raising almost $8,000 from 62 donors. The money raised goes directly to  academic and behavioral intervention services as well as supplying students with school supplies, clothing, and hygiene products. It also helps fund their dropout prevention program, which serves the most vulnerable students in the community. Communities In School of the Midlands provides support groups, mentorship programs, tutoring, and homework help to ensure students remain in school until graduation.

CEO Tanika Epps talked about how Midlands Gives has helped them become more visible in the community. “This year was a milestone for Communities In Schools of the Midlands. For the first time, our team participated in Midlands Gives at Segra Park. Because we left the comfort of our office on May 7th, we were able to discover other nonprofits that have similar needs. Since then, we have collaborated with over 5 other organizations to start project initiatives and advocate for children and families in the Midlands.” The benefits of participating in Midlands Gives goes beyond fundraising, it also brings our community together, forming strong philanthropic collaborations.

Communities In Schools of the Midlands has done incredible things, serving the children of Columbia and surrounding cities. Midlands Gives has allowed them to further engage the community and promote awareness of at-risk youth and families. Their services to the Columbia community are unparalleled and wouldn’t be possible without Midlands Gives.
