The purpose of the Rev. Joseph A. De Laine Memorial Fund is to honor the legacy of a civil rights champion and native son of South Carolina. Because of De Laine’s dedication, persistence, and sacrifice, 20 petitioners from South Carolina’s Clarendon County — buoyed by scores of supporters — sued for their children’s rights as American citizens. Their lawsuit, Briggs v. Elliott, was the first of five cases (collectively called Brown v. Board) that caused the U.S. Supreme Court to rule that the ‘separate but equal’ doctrine has no place in public education.
All donations to this fund will be used for commissioning, establishing, and maintaining a permanent memorial in the state of South Carolina to honor Rev. De Laine, Briggs plaintiffs, and Briggs supporters for their extraordinary contributions to the national landscape of racial equality.
The Rev. Joseph A. De Laine Memorial Fund is sponsored by Central Carolina Community Foundation which is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization recognized by the IRS. All donations made are tax-deductible.
