Scholarship Impact: Medical Scholarships Support Future Healthcare Workers

Healthcare workers have always been vital aspects of our communities, but during the current pandemic, their heroism and strength have been needed more than ever. Knowing the impact and importance of this field, the Community Foundation is proud to support donors who provide scholarships to support students pursuing degrees in the medical field.

The Judith M. Davis Legacy Tuition-Based Scholarships are named after the former executive vice president and chief legal officer for BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, Judith Davis. Judith “Judy” Davis was very active in serving and giving back to her community. She was a board member at the Community Foundation, United Way of the Midlands, SC Launch, EngenuitySC, Columbia College and Palmetto Conservation Foundation. With her incredible legacy, scholarships have been established in her name to support students pursuing a career in the field of nursing.

The Judith M. Davis Legacy Tuition-Based Scholarship Fund for Nursing is a renewable scholarship that is awarded to junior or senior nursing students to aid in tuition costs. The Judith M. Davis Legacy Tuition-Based Scholarship for Nursing Certificates is a renewable scholarship that was established to support students attending Midlands Technical College who are pursuing a certificate to be a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Patient Care Technician (PCT).

“I am immensely grateful for this scholarship that you have given me for my second year of nursing school,” Kaylee Weber, 2019-2020 Judith M. Davis Scholarship recipient, said. “Due to your donation last year, I have been able to learn about how to  recognize and aid in treating the ailments of my future patients.”

Recipients of these scholarships agree to work for at least two years in the state of South Carolina after graduation or completion of their programs. Not only do these scholarships give to students, they give back to our state by adding qualified and motivated nurses into our healthcare systems.

“Receiving this scholarship allows me to focus solely on the nursing program while striving to maintain a high GPA,” Ariel Brosnan, 2019-2020 Judith M. Davis Scholarship recipient, said. “I look forward to serving the communities of South Carolina by working as a nurse following earning my degree. I will be forever grateful for your generosity and willingness to help me achieve my goal of becoming a registered nurse.”

The Easterby Family Scholarship was established to support students from Laurens County pursuing an education in the theological or medical field. This scholarship is awarded to students who are enrolled in either graduate or postgraduate degree programs.

“Your financial support most definitely helped me to reach this point in my medical career training, and I promise that your contributions will not go in vain,” Victoria Washington, 2019-2020 Easterby Family Scholarship recipient and MUSC student, said. “A primary goal that I intend to fulfill in the near future is to give back to the community because without your support, finding the financial means for my medical education would have been more difficult to the say the least.”

Now more than ever, the impact of healthcare workers can be felt across the country and in our communities. The Community Foundation is proud to be the home of these medical scholarships along with many others.
